We're the Only Ones in Charge of Our Joy

Hi Reader,

As an artist and parent, I've had to juggle full-time parenting and working full-time for about three years. I have the grey hairs to prove it! I've done all the things possible to protect my mind from the stress of it all (self-care, therapy, journaling, finding support) but it's still a challenging experience to go through. Our minds can only handle so much before it becomes "too much." I like to share what it's like to offer comfort that hard things will continue to come our way and we can get through them, imperfectly and a little bruised but we'll survive.

Art has always been a saving grace in my life from the moment I discovered it as a kid. It has been backed by science that we can self-regulate and self-soothe through doing things with our hands. If you can pick up a creative activity when you're feeling super anxious it will become a haven for inner peace and centeredness.

Painting became my go to since age 14. I wasn't naturally skilled or talented and it was out of the norm in my working class family system, but I kept at it because I felt happy and at peace doing it. Cut to decades later, I'm still at it and it still brings me joy and peace.

Now that my little one is in school I've had a bit of time and space for myself. I set up my art studio and office and have been making more time to paint until the end of the year. So when I saw that there were some local exhibits coming up I submitted my work to SMALL WORKS (because I specialize in small-scale painting) and my tiny gouache painting was selected for exhibition!
